What is On-Demand Publishing? |
| |
Relatively recent technological advances make it possible for Dog Ear Publishing to produce
a single book in response to each incoming order. Both the covers and the the inside
pages can be manufactured using 'print-on-demand' equipment.
The on-demand publishing approach utilized by Dog Ear PUblishing saves the self-publishing
author a considerable amount in printing and storage of books. Since books are printed only
AFTER an order is received, your cost is immediately offset by a SALE! You NEVER pay for
us to print books on the HOPE of a sale.
The print-on-demand concept
At the heart of on-demand publishing technology is the concept of
Print-On-Demand – which is storing complete images of every page
in a computer's memory. In technical terms, the images are stored
as vector graphics or 600 dots per inch (dpi) bitmaps in PostScript
format. When an order arrives, the appropriate paper stock is fed
into a high-speed, digital duplexing laser printer. Then the digital
file is recalled from memory and printed. The resulting pages (the
"book block") are combined with a color cover produced on a digital
color laser printer, and bound (generally perfect bound). The finished
book is packaged and shipped to the bookbuyer, generally within
3 to 5 business days of the order being placed. While this is happening,
credit cards are being verified, costs tabulated and Sales Payments
accrued in the author's account.
In on-demand publishing, the author is completely in control of the process and makes
ALL the decisions regarding their book. You completely own your book in its ENTIRETY.
This contrasts sharply with conventional trade publishing practices, in which the author
relinquishes all control, and the design is created - and paid for - by the publishing house.
You'll want a great design and layout – something you will be proud to show to friends and
family, and also critical for enticing people to purchase a copy. Our staff will perform the
layout for your book based upon YOUR design input.. If you aren't experienced with book
design, some consulting time with an experienced graphic designer here at Dog Ear Publishing may be in order. You can also find someone in your
local community by asking for a referral at a local print shop, or look to Dog Ear Publishing's
talent pool - and let us recommend a resource. A competent graphic designer should be able to help you create
a wonderful design which is crisp and handsome and in keeping with the your vision for
the book.
